CNN —Hurricane season is months away, but the waters where hurricanes roam haven’t received the memo. North Atlantic temperatures typically only go up from here, climbing in spring and reaching a maximum in early fall when hurricane season also peaks. The earlier La Niña arrives, the sooner it would influence hurricane season. “If you don’t want an active hurricane season, you would need La Niña to wait as long as possible to begin,” McNoldy said. Forecasters with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center believe La Niña could arrive as soon as summer, but more likely by fall.

The San Francisco-Oakland urban area's population was corrected to 3.5 million residents from 3.2 million.

The Horn of Africa is enduring its worst drought in decades, while a historic drought in Argentina has hammered soy and corn crops. "In terms of the climate change signal, it very much fits with what we're expecting," said Hayley Fowler, Professor of Climate Change Impacts at Newcastle University. Some 90% of the mainland is suffering from drought, with severe drought affecting one-fifth of the country - nearly five times the area reported a year earlier.

The revelation of the Fomalhaut’s two inner rings has suggested that planets hidden deeper within the star system may be affecting the dust belt’s shape. Stars form from gas and dust, and then a ring of leftover material called a protoplanetary disk orbits the star, where planets are born. Once the planets form around a star, debris belts form and become shaped by the gravity of the planets. Studying the dust belts can help unlock more of the secrets behind how planetary systems form. “I think it’s not a very big leap to say there’s probably a really interesting planetary system around the star.”

Denka’s facility in LaPlace, La., is in an industrial corridor sometimes referred to as “Cancer Alley,” because of the elevated cancer risks among communities there. The Justice Department sued a chemical manufacturing company in an industrial area of southern Louisiana, saying it must cut emissions of a carcinogenic material. The DOJ filed the lawsuit against Denka Performance Elastomer LLC on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency stating that the company’s neoprene plant in LaPlace, La., along the Mississippi River, disproportionately exposed Black residents to the chemical chloroprene.
